around london 2017 [part 1]

heads up

i’m directly below a flight path where i live in south london. every 2 minutes you’ll hear the whine of an approaching jet plane and hear it fade into the distance as it makes its descent to Heathrow.

this doesn’t sound as bad as you might think. the noise is noticeable but the walls aren’t shaking from the constant thundering of jet engines as i’m still pretty far out from the airport. i’ve got used to it now but either way the planes don’t bother me, in fact i think its pretty cool – the best moments are when im in the garden on a nice sunny day and you get sweeped by the shadow of a monstrous A380 for just a split second. or when im walking to work on a miserable day and the jets skim the fog, punch through the cloud base and leave behind a swirling vortex.

every 2 minutes i’m reminded how many people are making their way over to this country. i’m reminded there’s a whole bunch of people just about to return from holiday, see loved ones or make a crucial business deal. sometimes i’d like to know who they are and what their story is. you can just about make out the airplane livery so you know where they come from but i’d like to know what their story would be. i like to think that everyone coming into land on those planes has been invited here. because despite recent events, one thing i know for certain is that London and the rest of the UK is open and welcome to all.
