around london [a/w 2016]

worn down

as you trudge about on your daily commute in london you would’ve seen the detail above. you’ll hardly notice them on the stairs of the underground but its one of my favourite details of the city.

it can get very dusty and wet on the underground and this non-slip stair nosing prevents you from falling on your ass down a flight of stairs. its made from nickel bronze with silicon carbide granules cast into a matrix pattern. the properties and texture of the metal are designed to withstand incredibly high footfall but over time the thousands of footsteps wear it down each day. it gains a timeline – a gradient of imperfections. the plate not only polishes to a beautiful surface sheen but it transforms –  it captures evidence of human presence. these little traces of clues are everywhere in the city and i love looking for the more obscure ones. i recently explored a completely deserted london and it made searching and piecing them together a lot more fun.

objects that gain character over time are so much more interesting when they have a story to tell like the stair plate above. i know its a weird detail to pick up on but in general, i’m a big fan of products that are resilient and are designed to be used and enjoyed for a long time. the things we own bear the brunt of whatever life throws at us. itll be nice if they can withstand the journey.

its been a busy 2016. the best way to see what im up to is on twitter and instagram stories. in the meantime, below is the remainder of the best things i’ve seen in (and out of) london this year:
